It was a Friday night in August 2011, 9pm precisely. I just got home from the Island after a long day. My phone was ringing as I was taking the Island off oops I meant taking off my clothes. It was my man from way back that was calling me, he asked where I was and I told him I just got into the house. He said he was around my area and he asked if I was down to hang out. Hell yea I said and besides we hadn’t seen in a while.
He picked me up about 10 minutes later and when I asked where we were heading to, he said somewhere around and I was like where exactly, he didn’t respond and when I asked again he said when we get there I would see for myself. It immediately hit me Mide could want to use me for blood money or why was he keeping the place a secret? I was going to ask him to pull over so I could get out of the car but seemed it was too late as he drove into the Psychiatric Hospital (Yaba Left). Me Yaba Left? I wanted to bite him but wouldn’t that have justified the reason for being there? I thought against that move and decided to remain calm until he parked. I looked round and I actually found out there was a joint there. Mide said welcome to PSYCHIA and I smiled letting out my relief.
The bottles were flowing and as usual I was on my big Udeme. I must say this, the joint served the best catfish pepper soup I have ever tasted in the whole of Yaba Local Government at the time (because I hardly go there, though I was there recently but had power horse and grilled fish). Trust me the catfish pepper soup served at that joint opposite Forte Oil in Obalende is the best in Lagos. The obvious happened, one of my close friends, Femi called me and asked where I was. I started stuttering, how was I to say I was in the Psychiatric Hospital or Yaba Left? I told him I was around my area and he asked where exactly, I said was close to Harvey road. He probed further asking where near Harvey Road, the Udeme was already doing its work and I said I was inside Psychia, and he was like what, I just barked Psychiatric Hospital jor and the sick dude was like Dipo dem admit you ni? I responded by saying na you dem go admit for Yaba Left. I told him there was a joint there and that he should come over but he was having none of that. Mide collected the phone from me and convinced him to come over. He eventually did and saw things for himself, he also acknowledged the catfish was on point.
I don’t know if the joint has a name but I call the place PSYCHIA. The people who troop into that place week in week out cannot be quantified despite it being in a Mental home.
Moral of the story? None jare, but never judge a book by its cover.
Let me leave you with one of my favourite quotes ” one hand washes the other, both hands wash the face” (Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in Boardwalk Empire). To me it means collaboration can go a long way in making the world a better place.
